IT advances are taking place at a heady pace. On overall consideration, it seems absolutely necessary that all IT programs must involve a major component on the use of IT only for socially and individually harmfless and positively beneficial uses. Or else our civilization will go to dogs faster and sooner than we imagine.Right now IT professionals also know how to pander to cheap and self-destructive user preferences of IT users which appeal to overwhelming masses just for commercial gain.

TechAnvil,
You're enthusiasm for IT shines through! As far as a Corporate IT career path in this "Flat world" (see Thom Friedman's book), tech skills alone are not enough - except for a tiny and very smart minority.
The optimal skill set mix is a fusion of people skills + business skills + tech skills.

This is nice information but it is really only applicable to operations IT jobs, which is pretty much the lowest tier in terms of compensation and working conditions... Certifications have little value outside of the "admin" or "operations" space, and even then, you don't need them to get a good job if you have a strong technical bachelors degree from a reputable university.

Additionally, you are right in saying that IT jobs are secure because someone has to "touch" the equipment, but again, this is speaking from an Operations/Admin perspective. Many, if not most, IT jobs don't require touching hardware, and thus, can and are easily outsourced.

Finally, I think its important for young viewers out there to realize that IT is a wide and varied profession with few absolutes...job experiences can vary wildly based on the company you work for, its culture, and the level of the IT totem pole you work on (i.e. development, management, QA, operations, etc.).

IT is very practical for your own business too. I write about IT for people all day long. I think it is very interesting. When used correctly, IT will make businesses far more efficient, saving them time and money.
