Help desk is the worst job in IT. No one takes more *@#!. Thats why I’m finishing school and getting higher level certs. I’m done w/ that nonsense. Good when you’re just getting into the field for experience, but dont stay there! I dont know what it is about help desks, but it aint good.

I personally agree with you… If you want to earn you must learn not because everybody is getting a high paid job you also follow the same path. Be a jack of few trades not all trades developed your skills and compassion is very important in this career. Very good advice.

great explaination,clear and precise!
i totally agree with you(but in my country a lot of programmers are also m$ noobs,a lot of them;only some have true m$ skills, find a unix 1337 is nearly impossible):
do this job only if you want learn it not only to find a job;it’s not like maths, science or some others works, the amount of knowlage is hudge and you must be updated constantly

As an IT Vet, I would estimate that the majority of his comments are on the upbeat side.
Reality IMO: IT is a highly competitive field, and between off shoring, H1B’s and no real entrance barriers I would never recommend anyone I know going into IT. In general IT does not require a degree or certifications - both are largely a waste of money. Think twice before going into IT, seriously…

IT is very practical for your own business too. I write about IT for people all day long. I think it is very interesting. When used correctly, IT will make businesses far more efficient, saving them time and money.

Finally, I think its important for young viewers out there to realize that IT is a wide and varied profession with few absolutes…job experiences can vary wildly based on the company you work for, its culture, and the level of the IT totem pole you work on (i.e. development, management, QA, operations, etc.).
April 26th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Additionally, you are right in saying that IT jobs are secure because someone has to “touch” the equipment, but again, this is speaking from an Operations/Admin perspective. Many, if not most, IT jobs don’t require touching hardware, and thus, can and are easily outsourced.
April 27th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
This is nice information but it is really only applicable to operations IT jobs, which is pretty much the lowest tier in terms of compensation and working conditions… Certifications have little value outside of the “admin” or “operations” space, and even then, you don’t need them to get a good job if you have a strong technical bachelors degree from a reputable university.

TechAnvil,
You’re enthusiasm for IT shines through! As far as a Corporate IT career path in this “Flat world” (see Thom Friedman’s book), tech skills alone are not enough - except for a tiny and very smart minority.
The optimal skill set mix is a fusion of people skills + business skills + tech skills.
